About the paraprofessional test

The Parapro Test is a general aptitude test that  is required by many schools in many different states for demonstrating the qualification of working as a paraprofessional.

What the test is

The ParaPro Test is what you need to take if you are seeking work as a paraprofessional. This test was designed to satisfy the requirements of the federally legislated No Child Left Behind Act, and now the Every Student Succeeds Act.

Registering for the test

Candidates are able to take the test at a designed testing center, as well as at home from their computer.

The cost to take the ParaPro Test at an in-person testing center is $55.

The cost to take the test remotely is $91.

Eligibility to take the test

In order to be eligible to take the test, the law requires that you fulfill at least one of the following:

  • An associate of arts degree
  • Two years of college
  • Demonstrate an understanding and ability to assist students in the instruction of reading, writing, and math

Test delivery

Please note, the test is only administered in English.

Length of the test

The ParaPro Test consists of 90 multiple-choice questions, and you are given 2½ hours to complete the test.

1.Reading skills and knowledge: To measure the examinee’s ability to understand, interpret, and analyze a wide range of text which may use graphs, charts, and tables that are drawn from a variety of sources using the following skills:

  • Identify main idea
  • Identify supporting ideas
  • Identify text organization
  • Determine the meaning of text
  • Draw inferences from text
  • Determine whether a text is fact or opinion
  • Interpret information from graphs, charts, or tables
  • To measure the examinee’s ability to apply the foundations of reading skills in the classroom to help students:
  • Recognize long and short vowel sounds
  • Recognize the different types of affixes
  • Decode words using context clues
  • Distinguish the difference between synonyms, antonyms, and homonyms 
  • Alphabetize words
  • To measure the examinee’s ability to use the tools of the reading process to aid student in:
  • Skimming and scanning a text, and knowing the most effective method to use
  • Learning to use a dictionary
  • Interpreting written information

2.Mathematics: To measure the examinee’s ability to apply mathematical concepts to abstract and real-life situations. No calculator is allowed. The three categories covered in the math section include: 

Number sense and algebra

  • Adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing whole numbers, fractions, and decimals
  • Recognize greater than, less than, and equal to
  • Know math vocabulary, such as sum, difference, product and quotient
  • Order fractions
  • Recognize equivalent fractions
  • Demonstrate knowledge of place values
  • Compute percentages
  • Demonstrate knowledge of exponents
  • Demonstrate knowledge of order of operations
  • Solve variable-linear equations
  • Identify the next number in a pattern sequence

Geometry and measurement

    • Represent time and money in multiple ways
    • Converting units of measurement
    • Identify geometrical shapes
    • Find the area, volume, and parameter of a shape
    • Graph data on an xy-coordinate plane

Data analysis

    • Given a table, chart, or graph, demonstrate the ability to interpret trends
    • Compute mean, median, and mode

3.Writing: Writing skills and knowledge in order to identify or help the students with the following:

  • Grammatical errors
  • Errors in word usage
  • Errors in punctuation
  • Subject, verb and predicate 
  • Nouns, verbs, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, and prepositions
  • Errors in spelling
  • Organize ideas using an outline
  • Identify and use appropriate reference materials
  • Writing a thesis statement
  • Edit run-on sentence fragments

Receiving a passing score

The test administrator, ETS, does not set the passing score for the ParaPro Test. Instead, the local school district or state makes that decision.
